Phoenix, Arizona.

Daisy in the daisies,
Daisy in the dirt,
nose to the rocks, locked in,
sniffing like she’s cracked the case—
Detective Pug, on the trail of Something Horrendous.

I pull the leash.
She plants her paws.
A living, breathing cinder block,
fully committed to uncovering
The Source of The Stink.

“Come on, Daisy.”
Nope.
“This isn’t the missing Watergate tapes.”
Still nope.
She’s locked in, locked down, locked away
in the musky archives of dog obsession.

I yank.
She drags.
She snorts.
I lose.
I don’t know what’s under those rocks,
but I do know I don’t want it in my house.

Encounters of the Neighborhood Kind
No one's around.
Except for a guy—
young, but walking with a cane.

Sciatica, I overheard once.
Not that old, but moving slow.
I don’t ask.
He just smiles at Daisy.

"Can I pet her?"
"Sure."

And she’s on him,
scaling his leg like he’s Everest,
little paws scrambling, tail wagging,
her full 12 pounds of Pugzilla
about to take this man down.

I brace—
but he laughs.
Loves it.
Asks her age.
Three in April.

A quick chat, a moment shared.
Then, before I leave,
he says something simple.
Something that lingers.

"Thank you for sharing."

And that’s it.
That’s all.
But somehow, it sticks.

Like a good scent in the air.
Like something worth sniffing out.

Tomorrow...
Daisy will find another clue,
another stinky reward,
a whispering message
left in the dirt.

She’ll pull the lead.
And I’ll follow,
right behind her,
dragged into the mystery,
whether I like it or not.

Another day, another sniff,
another battle of wills.
She digs in.
I give in.

Because some secrets—
especially the stinky ones—
just won’t be ignored.
