Daisy’s Golden Warning (A High-Altitude Horror Story)

Breckenridge, Colorado.

Thin air, chapped lips,
nose dry as a forgotten raisin.
The mountains were perfect—
until nightfall.

I check into Gravity House.
Expensive as hell,
but for some reason,
stacked with six bunk beds.

A different bed every night,
like some twisted game show.
But me?
I stick to the same one.
My one constant in this frozen alpine nightmare.

It’s late.
Lights out.
I peel back the covers, ready to crash—

"RUFF! RUFF! RUFF!"

Daisy.
Standing guard.
Eyes locked on me.
Serious. Determined.
A warning in her bark—
like an air raid siren before disaster.

"What the hell are you barking about?"

I pull the sheet back.

The crime is revealed.

Dead center of the mattress.
A perfectly executed piss puddle.
A bullseye of betrayal.

And yet—
this time,
she told me.

"I pissed! I pissed! I pissed!"
"Don’t get in the bed! You’re gonna get pissed on!"

A moral dilemma.
Do I scold her?
Or do I respect the honesty?

Daisy just stares.
Unashamed.
A pug with nothing to hide.

I sigh.
Peel the sheets off.
Find another goddamn bunk.
Because in the end,
at least she warned me.

That’s trust.
That’s friendship.
That’s Daisy.
